![]() Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you and reveal Jesus to you. What truth do you see in the verse (or verses) you wrote down? What is their surrounding context? What did they mean to the original recipients? What do they mean today? Write down what you see. Afterwards write out in your journal the verse (or verses) that spoke to you. Before reading your daily passage, ask God to speak to you His truth. Begin by choosing a Bible reading plan, such as "A Chapter A Day," or one that works for you. When I prayed, I asked God to help me to embrace the power of His word into my daily life and witness … to allow His word to search my heart to make sure my beliefs and behavior are right so that I can grow in the Lord and serve Him in the community in which He has placed me.SOAP journaling is centered on God’s Word. When I meditated upon the fact that God’s word is dependable, it reminded me that God’s word brings me to maturity and equips me for ministry. When I meditated upon the fact that God’s word is profitable, it reminded me that God’s word establishes my beliefs and my behaviors, but also it corrects my beliefs and my behaviors if need be. When I meditated upon the fact that God’s word is inspired, it reminded me that God’s word speaks to the heart (Acts 2:37) and reveals the heart (Hebrews 4:12). It brings people to maturity and equips them for ministry. ![]() ![]() It is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction and teaching righteousness. God’s word is inspired, profitable and dependable. When I interacted with this Scripture reading, I observed three words that stood out concerning God’s word. The Scripture reading comes from 2 Timothy 2:16-17: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” O – Observation Someone said, “Prayer is the seed (the Scripture you just studied) that falls on the good soil in your heart so that it will take root and produce fruit in your life.” Example of The SOAP Method of Bible Study S – Scripture This step involves asking God to work in your life concerning the truths you’ve just discovered in your Bible reading. What is God saying to me today? How can I apply what I have just read to my walk with the Lord? Do I need to make changes? Do I need to take an action? P – Prayer This step encourages you to make God’s word personal in your life. What do you see? What stands out? What didn’t you notice before? Is there repetition, comparison or contrast? During this step you basically ask yourself: what do I see and what does it mean? A – Application This step encourages you to interact with the Scriptures that you have written out in your notebook. If you read a large passage of Scripture, just write out the verses that spoke to you. You need to write out the Scriptures in your notebook. It helps you interact with God’s word so that you can discover life principles and truths for your daily walk with the Lord. The SOAP method of Bible study is not simply reading the Bible and then going on your merry way. The SOAP acronym will help you remember the steps that you will take to study the Bible for yourself. Before you know it, you will be digging into God’s truth for yourself. Once you make this a habit, it will become a part of your life. You will need a Bible, a pencil, a notebook and about 15 minutes.
